Independent senator who will do what’s right

My Sunday ritual is to wake up early and read the Union Leader while drinking coffee on my back porch. There’s just a hint of Fall in today’s air. The birds are chirping.

It was wonderful to encounter this Letter to the Editor, "We need an independent senator," in support of my candidacy.

"Carla Gericke has proven that she’s an independent thinker who’s willing to stand up to established interests and do what’s right. I hope you’ll join me in voting for her as our next state senator in November."

Broad experience

Yesterday, the pictured Letter to the Editor appeared in the Union Leader. I hope to earn YOUR vote on November 6th!

"New Hampshire is a unique state. Our representatives are far closer to the people than other states, which provides a diverse and interesting Legislature. But each seat in our Senate must be guided by more than ideology or popularity. It takes deliberation, intelligence, attention to detail, and most of all, principles, to make a good senator. Members of the Senate should inspire confidence, make sense, and make a sincere effort to follow the principles that make New Hampshire a state worth living in.

Carla Gericke will be just such a senator."

My experience includes finishing high school when I was 16 years old, law school when I was 21. Professionally, I practiced law in South Africa, where I focused on Legal Aid cases for the underprivileged, and in California, where I worked in-house at high tech firms, including Apple, Logitech, and Scient.

I have served and continue to serve on several nonprofit boards, and have successfully worked in the nonprofit sector at an executive level for many years, managing diverse groups of volunteers, budgets, and day-to-day administration.

I also hold an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from The City College of New York, and my literary works and blogs have appeared in print and online. Maybe I’ll share some of my short stories someday!

Town Square YUUUUGE Success

On Tuesday, candidates and supporters gathered at Manchester City Hall for our first Town Square: Come hear ye, hear ye! The goal of these recurring monthly events is:

"Candidates, bring your 5 minute stump speeches! Voters, bring your questions! Let’s have some fun while we respectfully discuss issues important to us in our communities. Hope to see YOU there! Be there, or be, well, not at the Town Square! :P"

Two Republican candidates from Ward 3 joined the fun, each also giving a short introductory speech. I hope next time even more candidates–of all persuasions–show up. Let’s bring some human interaction to the race!

ICYMI: New Video and Taxpayer Protection

Yesterday, I introduced a new series called “In Case You Missed It” featuring past Letters to the Editor, newspaper articles, supporter letters, etc. The goal of these short videos is to show voters of District 20 that I am engaged in local politics, understand the issues, and have a track record of sticking to my limited, Constitutional government principles.

In this video, I cover my recent Union Leader LTE that asks: How open is NH government? Hint: Not much. (Don’t shoot the messenger, instead, elect me to fix it!)

On Tuesday, I attended a meeting of Granite State Taxpayers at Murphy’s in Bedford (pictured with former Supreme Court Justice Chuck Douglas, and Ray Chadwick of Granite State Taxpayers–go show this new Facebook page some lurv!).

It was fascinating to learn more about this Fall’s proposed Constitutional amendment that will restore traditional taxpayer standing after it was stripped away by the courts. CACR 15 will appear on the ballot for YOU to vote on–YES!!!

Unlike the incumbent for District 20 who was one of only two senators who voted against CACR 15, I will be voting in favor of this Constitutional amendment. I hope you will too!

How open is NH government?

Here’s my Letter to the Editor in today’s Union Leader:

To the Editor:

"We like to pretend our government is open and transparent, but is it? In the category of “Public Access to Information,” according to a 2015 Center for Public Integrity study, New Hampshire ranked 49th out of 50 states.

Several bills designed to make improvements were killed this legislative session. I sat in on testimony and was shocked to learn the AG’s office dedicates meaningful resources to redacting what should be public information. How Orwellian!

The AGs office recently offered Right-to-Know training to the Home Education Advisory Council. Sounds great, right? But, this training session was not open to the public. Why is the AG’s office doing training of Sunshine laws in secret?

I am running as a Republican for State Senate in District 20. I am a board member of Right to Know NH, a volunteer organization dedicated to improving government transparency. We also offer RTK training and services. You can learn more at: https://righttoknownh.wordpress.com.

How can we hold our officials accountable if we don’t even know what they are doing? We can’t, and the system is designed to protect the government, not you.

As your senator, I will work to pass laws with teeth that improve our Right to Know. I will also disclose my votes, regardless of whether roll call was taken. I promise to be accountable to you, the taxpayer. Our government belongs to us, we pay for it, and we have the Right to Know what it is up to!

Tax all “Zombies” equally

Look, I like the idea of the ARMI project being developed in the Manchester Millyard by entrepreneur extraordinaire, Dean Kamen (even if the manufacturing of "human tissue and replacement organs" has "Zombie Apocalypse" written all over it).

BUT, according to this Union Leader article, the "New Hampshire Legislature appears on the verge of granting an unprecedented, 10-year tax holiday to firms involved in the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) project in Manchester and a student loan forgiveness program for workers who devote at least five years to it."

This is not cool. Giving an "unprecedented" tax break to one company, and not others, is not applying the New Hampshire tax code "uniformly," nor is it "broadly based." The legislature should not be picking winners and losers.

Says Greg Moore, state director of fiscally-conservative Americans for Prosperity:

“While we wish the ARMI project the best of success, the idea of having the state give away tax exemptions to one favored or well-connected industry, or in the case of this bill, one company, opens up Pandora’s Box in terms of encouraging cronyism and attempting to have the state pick winners and losers…”

“We should attract new business to New Hampshire by having the best business environment, not through chasing companies by throwing taxpayer subsidies at them.”

The AG’s office has said this tax exemption is constitutional even though it would only be extended to firms involved in the manufacture of human tissue and replacement organs, specifically: "the bill grants for 10 years exemptions from the state’s two business taxes on corporate profits and on all business activity to all firms that have at least 75 percent of their taxable activity in the ARMI project".

So only ARMI can benefit from this? This is the wrong approach. The best way forward is to apply any tax exemption to all companies equally. After all, we know lower taxes benefit the local economy.

When Amazon was looking for its second HQ, I took pride in the fact that New Hampshire refused to offer special tax treatment, unlike all the other pandering states. We should be doing the same thing here, or you have to wonder… Who will be reaching out their hands to get special treatment next?
